Not sure I would have been happy with the guy at the end of the first row that spent most of his time looking at his phone.

Interesting. Thanks for posting it Gian. A lot more goes on for those kind of high speed runs than many people think.

You mean you don't just jump in, turn the key and go?

At those speeds just keeping the darn thing on a relatively straight line is a difficult job.

[Thank you Gian for correcting me on my original post.]

I was a really young kid when the pioneers of this sport (Mickey Thompson, Art Arfons and Craig Breedlove) we’re leading the pack in this quest to be the fastest on land. Then the (I believe) U.K. effort (the driver was an ex-fighter pilot) eclipsed the sound barrier, and now this team is on a track (literally) to up the record, again. Nationalism aside, it’s interesting that the only serious U.S.-based land speed record efforts are now relegated to piston-engine driven vehicles, and George Poteet dominates that class.

Breedlove’s last effort (Supersonic Arrow) never received the ultimate attention and required funding to be successful. The design also experienced some instability at speed, which arguably was more the result of dirt clogging up the front multi-wheel configuration.

    I’m pulling for this team!

Call me an old fuddy duddy but while this is interesting, I still find piston powered cars and boats more interesting. I guess that is because I can relate to them more.
