This effort clearly has a LOT of money and muscle behind it. I foresee them setting records, accordingly. I wonder what Craig Breedlove or Art Arfons are thinking?

That thing is fast. What is their ultimate goal so far as speed? I like to watch those speed runs but I wouldn't want to drive one of them.

The only thing I know that is faster is Nomad having sex with his child bride.

    Ron,

Their ultimate goal is to exceed 1,000 mph. There is more info on their website. From this latest video it sounds like they’re done with this round of testing. I think I read they will go to a two engine configuration. Not sure if I remember that correctly. Regardless, they apparently are taking the car home for modification.

I was wrong in my post above about adding a second engine. They're now using the data they've collected regarding friction, etc. to determine the size of the rocket engine that will be necessary, so the jet engine will be replaced with a more powerful rocket engine. A summary of what they've accomplished and what happens next is on the website here:

Thanks Gian, this was very interesting.

    A rocket engine?

Reading the article it sounded like they are adding a rocket engine good for an additional 60KN of thrust on top of the 90KN of thrust from the current jet engine. They also mention that the new rocket engine will be a monopropellant rocket. I may be wrong but from what I remember that means they are solid fuel type. That means that once you light them off you can't turn them off. They stop burning when they run out of fuel.

    That is some scary shit.

There seems to be some question about if they can get money to return to go for the 1,000 MPH record.

If you recall, the Blue Flame used the same "booster" technology to set the speed record way back when. I recall something like they added a sidewinder missile rocket motor that kicked in on the top end.

At top speed those wheels are barely on the ground enough to keep it from flying. I wish them well but I wouldn't want to be on it when it is at those speeds.

These guys are really doing some fantastic development and engineering for this. The story on the wheels is pretty amazing. Imagine the contrast between what these guys have learned and developed compared to what Craig Breedlove had to work with in his Spirit of America when he hit 600 mph in the 60s.

Thanks Gian for sharing these videos as I find them very interesting. Nothing outside what I would expect in regard to the wheels, but still interesting.

Probably what I would be real interested in would be the wheel bearing design. I would have to expect the bearing surface speeds to be very high.

They can always apply vacuum to the wheel bearings, as we did for the centrifuges in uranium separation at 80.000 rpm ... ;-)
