Plastic Trash found In Deepest Part Of Ocean

It is really sad that they have used the ocean for a dumping ground so long it has come to this. Makes me wonder just what it is doing to the sea food that we eat. I know they closed down the crab catching along the beaches here for a year or so because of dangerous levels of mercury in them

It's not just dumping in the ocean--trash on land can wash out to sea, and plastic sticks around for a very long time (as does mercury, lead, etc.)

That is true but a few years ago New York had barges that hauled their garbage out a few miles to dump it. Then it washed back in and filled the harbor and they had to spend millions dredging it out. A lot of what is in the Pacific came from Japan and other places but our West coast isn't entirely blame free either.

From what I have read China is among the worst polluters out there.

The US could totally eliminate all pollution and in reality it would hardly be noticed. Until the world as a whole decides to do something it will not improve. And when you consider how many countries are in absolute poverty they can't do anything to improve what they do.

Amen to that. There is some big talk about how they plan to clean up there act, but how do you prevent 1,419,394,689 people from crapping at least once every day?

Knowing how China operates they will pass a law that you can only crap every other day. And if you crap on a day you are not supposed to you will be shot in the head. That is not much worse than how they enforce their one child law for population control.

I believe they have suspended that one child law as they finally figured out that if all they had for future generations was boys it was going to be rather difficult to repopulate.

That is true Ron, but they had it for many years. And now it is a two child rule so they are no longer killing their child if it was a girl.

Having visited China back a few years just before the air got really bad, you are right on target. Growing the country and building infrastructure and manufacturing is at the expense of everything else. It really doesn't matter much what the West does with China, India and few other countries out there that are the real problem. We can never at any expense make up for them. As long as our statistics are going the right way as they are, we are not a major part of the bigger problem.

We mostly are based on statistics. Our air is cleaner, our water is cleaner, we are doing a better job of disposing of toxic substances and waste. While others talk a lot, shuffle their feet and look for a handout to pay their costs, we quietly walk the talk. Now part of this is due to the reduction in coal power plants and while some decry abandoning coal to the angst of the environmentalists, we are largely making up for it with natural gas. If we could just get around the corner on resuming nuclear power development we could make huge strides. We just need to keep on, keeping on - steady as she goes.
