Must have been lousy drivers. I never drag raced but once and that was a 70 Torino Cobra with the 429 and I beat him so bad I never shifted into 4th gear.

Might matter what engine John had in his Chevelle at the time. But a stock Cobra Jet was pretty strong. Keith Craft had a row of 3 or 4 restoration 428 Cobra Jet engines (all stock configuration) in their Dyno shop when they were running my motor in and checking it. I asked the Dyno Operator what the made in HP and he said stock thy normally saw around 410 - 415 HP, stock manifolds, smog crap, carb, heads, cam, etc. that’s basically the same as the old Q-code 427 Ford rated at 410 HP with a single 4 bbl carb, which isn’t to surprising considering their similarity other than cam and bore/stroke ratio. But then a 396/375 Chevelle was real strong to and it was easy to throw a 427 short block in.

    Dan,

I had the engine in my Cobra dynoed years ago and it came out at 440 horse at 6300 RPM. Not great by todays standards at all.

You are correct Dan. I had a L88 with headers and a B&M Turbohydro 400 with a manual shift valve body.
